Ferrari Dino up for auction – in time for Christmas

Online marketplace for classic and unique cars, Car & Classic, will be auctioning off a RHD 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT. The original brochure described it as “tiny, brilliant, safe…almost a Ferrari,” but many contend that this particular Dino is not just any Ferrari, but rather one of the most notable models in the brand’s history.

The initial partnership between Italian powerhouses Fiat and Ferrari resulted in a car that was never officially labeled as a Ferrari. In an effort to not hinder the popularity of his renowned V12 models, Enzo Ferrari opted to name his new venture after his late son Alfredo, who had been developing an early version of the engine used in the Dino. Nevertheless, the Dino marked an important achievement for the company as it was their initial production of a mid-engined, road-going Ferrari – a design that has since become closely tied to the brand.

The Dino, crafted by Pininfarina, is a visually striking vehicle. Its graceful contours and sleek exterior resulted in it being named the tenth most beautiful car ever by a distinguished group of over 20 automotive designers, as recognized by Car and Driver.

The 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT has been beautifully restored after undergoing a 12-year renovation at a UK-based shop. When it arrived, the car was in poor condition, but with a meticulous restoration process, it has been brought back to its original charm. The Dino was stripped down to the bare metal and received repairs or replacements for multiple panels. Additionally, all inner panels were taken out and the inner shell underwent sandblasting to create a solid foundation for the detailed cosmetic work.

In instances where authentic components were not obtainable, superior replicas such as Superperformance wheels, steering wheel and durable upholstery were acquired. The only distinctive enhancement is the placement of Ferrari badging on the back. This vehicle has since been verified and recorded in the Dino Compendium, an extensive publication documenting the model’s background.

The thorough refurbishment also covers the 2,418 cc DOHC V6 engine, which has undergone a complete reconstruction. This iconic motor was renowned for its strength and with the Dino’s lightweight of only 1,080kg, it could reach 50mph in just 5.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 148mph. These impressive numbers outdid those of its competitor, the Porsche 911S. Presently, the engine runs flawlessly and is part of an esteemed lineage of Ferrari V6 engines that dates back to the current highly regarded 296 GTB model.

This right-hand drive model from the UK has a comprehensive 52-year record and paperwork. Included in the history folder are the original purchase receipt and information about its five previous owners. The car also comes with an extensive collection of photos documenting its 12-year restoration, as well as copies of well-known publications featuring the Dino. Being a vintage vehicle, it is exempt from taxes and MOT inspections, and with only 1,100 miles driven since its restoration, this Dino is in excellent condition and ready to be cherished and driven with pleasure.
